Yesterday we had an African drumming and rhythm workshop at the Studio, for tap dancers. Lamine Sonko arrived with a car FULL of djembe drums, and introduced us to some African rhythms. Students tried out some drumming techniques, and learned to recognise some traditional calls and answers on the drum.
After the drum circle, the tap shoes went on and Harry Swift took the tappers through his translations of the rhythms onto the tap floor, with Lamine accompanying on the djembe. It was a great day, and inspiring to to bring the two art forms together in the spirit of the call and answer. There will definitely be more to come.
